I was eating dinner when my dad handed me the phone, someone started speaking in a rough Indian accent.
“Hello ma’am, I was wondering about people in your household reporting browser complaints, and…”
I didn’t get what he was saying so after a while I handed the phone over to my dad again. I asked him what it was about afterwards, and he said it was a scammer trying to give our computer a virus. He said that he changed the story and said he was a Microsoft employee, and he was going to talk us step-by-step to give our computer a free check up… I was wondering does anybody have any information about this scam or have you been scammed like this before?

There’s been a lot of people posting on the Internet wondering the samething lately I’ve noticed. I highly doubt they are really related to Microsoft.
According to some searches online the following are the most likely intentions of these phone scammers asking you to do stuff to your computer:
-they may ask you to search for certain files that may be normal and claim they are viruses
-they may ask you to visit a random website and download a fake virus protection, security software, etc that falsely claims you have a virus, malware, etc.
-upon downloading or even their “scanning” may actually download real viruses onto your computer or they will falsely report you have viruses and get you to pay a ’small’ fee to buy their full version virus software that will “fix” the supposed problem just to get some money.
-fake virus scanners and fake fixes that appear legit can install programs without your knowledge in the background that are used to steal your identity, passwords, financial information, or allow your computer to join in hacking denial of server attacks without you knowing.
Your best bet is to ignore these scammers on the phone…you never told Microsoft who you were and where you live and what products you had when you first got ur computer did you? Didn’t think so. Use common sense and you should be good!
Some additional info from Microsoft ( just general avoiding scams thing really ):http://www.microsoft.com/security/onlineā¦
who knows what those crazy Indian computer geeks do lol (no offense,I have Indian friends)
Maybe he dialed a wrong number? You know…it’s easy to get a wrong line when you call overseas.I don’t think it’s possible t give a computer virus through a phone conversation.
Probably you find this person on Scampond, note that sometimes scammers use multiple names but the story line is same.
Haven’t gotten a call like that but I do know for a fact that all phone scams have the same objective. They want your info and money.
